85. Spider

  1. Aleph, Lam, Mim.
  2. Do the humans think they will be left undisturbed and that they will not be tested, because they said: “we believe”?
  3. And indeed, we tested the ones that came before them through trial/ordeal. God will certainly know/distinguish the truthful/sincere/honest ones. And He will certainly know/distinguish the liars.
  4. Or do those who do evil deeds think they can outrun us? How evil is their judgment.
  5. As for those who hope to meet/encounter/interact with God, indeed, the time that God/the Creator/the Doer/the Eternal/the Everlasting/the One who does not need anyone else in His existence/the Unique/the unpartnered Power has appointed is surely coming. He is the One who perceives and hears in the best way possible/the One perceiving and hearing everything, the One who knows everything/the One who is unparalleled in knowledge.
  6. And whoever strives/struggles/makes an effort, then only strives/struggles/makes an effort for himself. Indeed, God/the Creator/the Doer/the Eternal/the Everlasting/the One who does not need anyone else in His existence/the Unique/the unpartnered Power, is free of need/independent from all beings/worlds, is the One whose wealth is unlimited, the Power besides which everyone is poor.
  7. For those who trusted/believed and worked/produced for peace/good, we will surely cover their nastiness/misdeeds. And we will surely reward them with the best of what they are doing.
  8. We suggested/urged the human to treat his parents in the best way possible, saying: ‘If they argue with you to make you associate with Me anything that you have no knowledge of, then do not obey them. Only to Me you will be returned, and I will inform you of what you have done.
  9. For those who trusted/believed and worked/produced for peace/good, we will surely put them among the lovers of peace/good.
  10. Among the people are those who say: ‘We have believed in God.’ But when he is harmed for the sake of God, he holds the trial/ordeal of humans as a suffering/punishment from God. But when help comes from your God, they will surely say: ‘We were with you.’ Isn’t God most knowing about what is in the chests/hearts of all beings/worlds?
  11. God will surely know/make known those who believe. And He will surely know/make known the hypocrites/pretenders/false faced.
  12. Those who denied/rejected said to those who believed: ‘Follow our way, we will carry your sins/mistakes.’ But they do not carry any of their sins/mistakes at all; the truth is that they are complete liars.
  13. They surely will carry their own burdens, and the burdens of others along with their own. On the day of judgment, they surely will be questioned about what they used to invent/fabricate/slander.
  14. Certainly, we sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years except fifty years. Then the flood seized them. Because they were cruel/unjust.
  15. We saved him and the companions of the ship/vessel, and we made it a sign/wonder/verse for all beings/worlds.
  16. And we sent Abraham. He said to his people: ‘Serve/worship God, beware/be mindful of Him; if you know, that is better for you.
  17. Besides God, you serve/worship idols/figures, and you create/invent lies/slander/falsehood. Indeed, those you serve apart from God, cannot give you any sustenance/livelihood. Search for sustenance/livelihood with God; serve/worship Him, thank/be grateful to Him. To Him you will be returned.
  18. If you deny; communities/nations before you had also denied. The duty of the messenger is none other than delivering a clear notification.’
  19. Haven’t they seen how God starts/initiates the creation, then repeats it/starts it over again? Indeed, this is easy for God.
  20. Say: ‘Travel/walk the Earth and see/observe/look at how He began the creation. Afterwards/subsequently, God produces/brings forth the other/later/last/succeeding/following/subsequent arising/formation/emergence/production. Indeed, God/the Creator/the Doer/the Eternal/the Everlasting/the One who does not need anyone else in His existence/the Unique/the unpartnered Power is the One whose power/capability reaches everything and is felt in everything.
  21. He punishes/afflicts whomever He wants/whomever wants it; He shows/bestows mercy/compassion/blessing unto whomever He wants/whoever wants it. And to Him you will be turned/returned.
  22. You cannot escape, not on the Earth and not in the skies. And you have, besides God, no friend/guardian and no helper/supporter.
  23. Those who rejected/disbelieved God’s signs/wonders/verses and meeting/encountering/coming face-to-face with/reuniting with God, they are the ones who have despaired/lost hope of My mercy/compassion/blessing. And for them is a painful suffering.’
  24. And the response of his people was only this: ‘Kill him or burn him.’ But God saved him from the fire. Indeed, there are signs/wonders/verses in this in this for a people who believe/trust/rely/give trust/give safety.
  25. And he said: ‘You have taken idols/figures apart from God to create affection/a bond of love between yourselves in this life. Then on the day of judgment you will deny/not recognize one another, you will curse one another. Your shelter/residence will be the fire, and you will have no helpers.
  26. Lot believed/trusted him. And he said: ‘Indeed, I am migrating/emigrating toward my God. Indeed, He is the definite Source and Owner of power and honor/He is very powerful/honorable. He is the definite­­­­ Source of all wisdom/there is wisdom in everything He does.’
  27. And we gifted Isaac and Jacob to him. And we placed prophethood and the book/writing in his lineage, and we gave him his reward in this world. Indeed, in the hereafter he surely is among the lovers of good and peace.
  28. And Lot, when he said to his people: ‘Indeed, you commit/approach such immorality/indecency/a shameful act that none of all beings/worlds has done before.
  29. Indeed, you approach men, you cut off/intercept the road/way, and commit/do evil/ugliness in your gathering/council.’ The answer of his people was only: ‘Bring us God’s suffering/punishment, if you are of the truthful ones.’
  30. Lot said: ‘My God, help me against these people who cause corruption/improperness/mischief.’
  31. When our messengers came to Abraham with the good news/glad tidings, they said: ‘Indeed, we are destroyers/annihilators of the people of this settlement/village/community. Because its people have become cruel/oppressive.’
  32. Abraham said: ‘But Lot is in it!’ They said: ‘We know better of who is in it. We will surely save him and his family. Except for his wife. She will be among the ones who stay behind/perish by remaining.’
  33. When our messengers came to Lot, he was distressed/upset by them and he felt faint/tangled up and uneasy because of them. They said: ‘Don’t be afraid and do not worry. We will save you and your family, except your wife. She will be among the ones who stay behind/perish by remaining.’
  34. Indeed, upon the people of this settlement/village/community we are sending down a disturbance/turmoil/trouble/harmful condition from the sky, because they have been going beyond limits/breaking away from boundaries.
  35. And certainly, from that city we have left a clear sign behind for a people who think/understand/use their reason.
  36. And to Midian, we sent their brother Shu’ayb/Little guide/Unifier. He said: ‘Oh, my people, serve/worship/devote yourselves to God. And hope/expect/look forward to the last/final day. And do not disturb peace on the Earth as disturbers/spoilers/corrupters/poisoners.
  37. But they denied him. So, the tremor/shaking/seismic shock seized/overtook them, and, in their own homes/settlements/dwellings/domains they fell prone/collapsed/kneeled/crouched lifeless.
  38. And Ad and Thamud. This is clear/visible/evident to you from their dwellings/houses/residences. And the devil/astray/distant/corrupt/rebellious/insolent/obstructing/opposing beautified/enhanced their deeds for them and led them astray/turned them away from the path. Whereas they were people who had insight/awareness/clearness of perception.
  39. And Korah, Pharaoh and Haman; Certainly, Moses came to them with clear evidences, but they were arrogant/grew proud on Earth/in the land, and they could not outstrip/escape.
  40. We seized each/all of them because of their own wrongdoing/error/sin. Onto some of them, we sent a storm of stones. And some of them were seized by the cry/shout/blast. And we let the Earth swallow some of them. And some of them we drowned. God was not to do injustice to them, but they were wronging their core-selves.
  41. The situation of those who take guardians/friends/allies/patrons apart from God, is like that of the spider who takes a house. And indeed, the most unsafe/fragile of houses is that of the spider. If they only knew.
  42. God/the Creator/the Doer/the Eternal/the Everlasting/the One who does not need anyone else in His existence/the Unique/the unpartnered Power knows what they call/beg/invoke to/for. He is the definite Source and Owner of power and honor/He is very powerful/honorable. He is the definite­­­­ Source of all wisdom/there is wisdom in everything He does.
  43. These are such examples we set for mankind, that none other than the knowledgeable/those who know can understand/comprehend/grasp.
  44. God created the skies and the Earth in truth. Indeed, there is a sure miracle/sign/wonder/verse in that for those who believe/have trust.
  45. Recite/read what has been revealed to you from the Book/Writing. And establish/maintain/continue with the prayer/the connection/the alignment/the attentive orientation. Because the prayer/the connection/the alignment/the attentive orientation prevents from indecency and from wrong/unacceptable acts. The remembrance/mention/mindfulness of God is greater. And God knows what you do.
  46. Do not argue/debate with the people of the Writing/Book except in the best/most beautiful/most fitting way. Except those of them who have strayed into cruelty. Say: We have believed in what is sent down to us and also in what is sent down to you. Our God and your God is One. And we are submitting/surrendering to Him.
  47. Like this, we have sent down the Writing/Book to you. Those whom we gave the Writing/Book believe/trust/rely on it. And among these are some who believe it. And none will deny/reject our signs/wonders/verses except the ungrateful who cover/conceal the truth.
  48. You were not reciting any writing/book before it, nor do you write it with your right hand. Otherwise, the falsifiers/those who invalidate/those who nullify surely would have doubted.
  49. No, it is clear/distinct signs/wonders/verses in the chests/hearts of those who have been given knowledge. None deny our signs/wonders/verses except the cruels/those who exceed a proper limit/those who tilt the balance/the misplacers.
  50. They said: ‘Why haven’t signs/wonders/verses/miracles been sent down to him from his God?’ Say: ‘Signs/wonders/verses/indicators are only with God; for I am only a clear warner/announcer.’
  51. Is it not enough for them that we sent a Writing/Book down to you, which is recited upon them? Indeed, there surely is a mercy and an advice/reminder in this for a people who believe/trust/rely/give trust/give safety.
  52. Say: ‘Between you and me, God is sufficient as a witness. He knows what is in the skies and the Earth. As for those who trust in the false/the untrue/the vain and deny/cover/reject God; they are the losers.
  53. And they ask you to hasten the suffering/punishment. If it weren’t for an appointed term, the suffering/punishment would surely have come to them. But it certainly will come to them suddenly, while they don’t perceive/expect it.
  54. They ask you to hasten the suffering/punishment. And indeed, hell/the deep ravine/the valley of Hinnom has surely surrounded those who deny/cover/reject.
  55. On the day the suffering/punishment will cover them from above them and from beneath their feet, it will say: ‘Taste what you were doing/making.’
  56. Oh, My servants who believe/trust. Indeed, My Earth is spacious/wide, so only serve/work for/devote yourself to Me.
  57. Every self/soul/person/breath/breathing being tastes death. Then to us you will be returned.
  58. Those who believe/trust and work/produce for peace/good, we will surely settle in lofty/elevated rooms of the heavenly garden underneath which rivers flow, remaining therein. How beautiful is the reward of the workers/doers/producers of value.
  59. They are patient and rely only on/trust only in their God.
  60. Many living creatures do not carry their own provision/sustenance. God/the Creator/the Doer/the Eternal/the Everlasting/the One who does not need anyone else in His existence/the Unique/the unpartnered Power provides for them and for you. He is the One who perceives and hears in the best way possible/the One perceiving and hearing everything, the One who knows everything/the One who is unparalleled in knowledge.
  61. If you asked them who created the skies and the Earth and subjected the sun and the moon, they surely would say: ‘God.’ So how then are they turned away/diverted?
  62. God both expands/widens and restricts/tightens livelihood/sustenance for whomever of His servants He wants. God knows of everything.
  63. And if you asked them who sends down water from the sky and revives the Earth after its death, they would surely say: ‘God.’ Say: ‘Praise/appreciation belongs to God.’ But most of them do not understand.
  64. This nearer/lower life is nothing but play/diversion and amusement/pastime, and indeed the subsequent/later/last/hereafter home/residence/dwelling is the real/heightened/ongoing/complete condition of life/aliveness. If they only knew.
  65. When they embark on/board a ship, they call/cry to God, making the dedication to Him pure/exclusive. But when He saves them/brings them to the land, behold; they associate partners with God.
  66. So that they may deny/be ungrateful for what we gave them, and to enjoy/take pleasure. But soon they will know.
  67. Haven’t they seen that we made a secure/safe sanctuary while people are being snatched/taken away/seized from around them? Do they still believe/trust/rely on the false/the untrue/the vain, and deny the blessing of God?
  68. Who is more cruel/wrongful/tilting the balance/misplacing than one who invents/fabricates a lie against God or denies the truth when it comes to him? Is there not a residence/lodging in hell/the deep ravine/the valley of Hinnom for those who deny/cover/reject?
  69. And those who strive/struggle/exert for us; we will surely guide them to our ways/paths. Indeed, God is with the ones who think and act according to what is beautiful/good/fitting.
