35. City

1.     I swear by this city, it is not as they think it is.

2.     You are secluded to this city/you will enter this city/you are free to dwell in this city.

3.     And by the one that gives birth and what it gives birth to,

4.     We truly have created the human in a distress and hardship.

5.     Does he think that no one has power over him?

6.     He says: ‘I have wasted wealth in abundance!’

7.     Does he think no one sees him?

8.     Didn’t we give him two eyes,

9.     a tongue, and two lips?

10.  And shown him the two ways/the two hills?

11.  But he could not get himself to jump onto that steep road/the steep pass of the mountain that is difficult to climb.

12.  What makes you know what the steep road is?

13.  It is freeing an enslaved neck from its bonds.

14.  Or the feeding on a day of hunger and distress

15.  of a near orphan,

16.  or a poor person who is oppressed, who is on hands and knees/in despair.

17.  Then, it is to be of those who believe and suggest patience, suggest compassion to each other.

18.  Those are the companions of good fortune and abundance/blessing.

19.  As for those who do not recognize our signs/wonders/verses; they are the companions of bad luck, of misfortune.

20.  There will be a fire locked onto them.
